Is Your Cash Balance Red?

Is your cash balance appearing as red/negative on StocksCafe? It should not be.

I had a chat with a user recently and she thought that it is normal for cash balance to be negative when P&L is negative.

Recall that cash balance is meant to easily tell you how much cash is available in that portfolio. Therefore, it should not be negative unless you want to use it to indicate that you are borrowing money to invest.

What should you do if your cash balance is currently negative?

  1. If you do not really care to track how much cash is left in your portfolio, we would suggest that you “hide” the feature via settings (on desktop). Under “Portfolio Cash Preferences”, uncheck Cash Balance – Display Cash Balance.
  2. If you do want to track your cash balance, all you need to do is find out how much cash that is currently in your portfolio/brokerage. Then simply make a deposit that is would end up with the portfolio reflecting the correct amount.
e.g. If your portfolio should be reflecting SGD 3000 but it is now negative SGD 200, simply add cash transaction to deposit SGD 3200.
