StocksCafe Now Supports Any Asset!

S

Regularly, I would receive requests asking, “When will StocksCafe include XXX?”. They are typically other exchanges like London Stock Exchange or Australia Stock Exchange. Occasionally, it would be about commodities or other assets such as insurance, mutual funds, etc.

Ideally, StocksCafe would be able to include at least all major exchanges, commodities, and funds in the future. However, I am not sure when that will happen, if it happens at all. And even then, StocksCafe cannot realistically include every single asset that exists in the world.

Hence, I decided to work around it and support all possible assets in another way – DIY style.

It only takes a few simple steps to add any asset to your account:

1) Define the asset – Define a new asset on this page.

2) Input transactions – Input transactions that you have performed with the new asset on this page (e.g. when you buy/sell).

3) Input payments received – Input payments you received from this asset on this page (e.g. dividends, interest, rental, etc).

4) Overview – Finally, this page gives an overview of the assets added, just like our stock portfolio page.

Bonus: Update the market value – You can also update the market value of your asset over time by going to the individual asset page and clicking on “Add new price”. To reach an individual asset page, you can start from the list of assets page and clicking on the asset name.

I hope that with this new feature, you can now track all your assets using StocksCafe!

As always, I am more than happy to receive questions and suggestions.

Happy investing!

  • @urameshi85 – Sure. That is certainly in the pipeline

@azael – sure. I will add options and futures as asset classes. Let me know if there are other things needed to support them.

  • Looking forward to when we can bulk import/enter (in simple format, I think 2 columns like date and price is enough for now) the list of prices of asset at various point of times. (e.g. monthly closing price, and we can copy and paste from sites like yahoo)

WIll be good if there is option to be include in portfolio performance calculation as well! Thanks for the improvement!

  • @zzsg – Bulk import/enter sounds good. Would you like to create a feature request for that?

“WIll be good if there is option to be include in portfolio performance calculation as well!” => This might be more complicated because of potential lack of price points in some assets leading to inaccurate computation/reduced volatility of asset. However, certainly doable is simply add up the total value between stocks portfolio and other assets.

  • I may have missed this but I am inputing holdings in USD. Able to key in the exchange rate for that particular trade so that I see my stocks performance in SGD?

  • The SGD amount is just the total amount in USD converted to SGD at the current spot price? Thanks for this new addition though! 🙂

  • Evan, thanks for clarifying. So if I am understanding correctly, the P&L in SGD is based off the current SGD value of my USD holdings minus the cost in SGD at the time/date of each transaction?

  • “So if I am understanding correctly, the P&L in SGD is based off the current SGD value of my USD holdings minus the cost in SGD at the time/date of each transaction?” => Hmm.. Actually, not true. Sorry, I think I was wrong earlier. Assuming that the stock is traded in USD and you entered the trade in USD, then the P&L in SGD should simply be the P&L in USD converted into SGD at current USD/SGD rate.

  • ” Assuming that the stock is traded in USD and you entered the trade in USD, then the P&L in SGD should simply be the P&L in USD converted into SGD at current USD/SGD rate.”

To seek further clarification, if I buy a stock at USD1.00 1 year ago (USD1=SGD1.40), and currently the stock is USD1.50 (USD1=SGD1.50. My profit is USD0.50. I presume the P&L in SGD is based on today’s price, ie 0.50 x 1.50.

I think whilst this is simple for the purpose of calculation, it didn’t account for currency shifts (which is in itself affecting P/L) and assumes that the buyer already had USD at that time instead of converting SGD to USD to buy, which is more common,

Could the system base it on (USD1.00 x 1.40) against USD1.50 x 1.50 to get the SGD P/L instead?

If not, then perhaps we should all be entering the transactions based on SGD we paid at the time of transaction rather than in USD.

  • “If not, then perhaps we should all be entering the transactions based on SGD we paid at the time of transaction rather than in USD.” => Yes, you are right. I believe in this case, it is best to enter the transactions (buy and sell) in SGD to have everything be considered in SGD.

  • Hi, in the case of stocks input from, say, LSE… would it be possible to define the current price as pulled from google finance, for example? At least that way, there’s some measure of auto updating. Though in hindsight, this would definitely break if Google Finance changes their accessibility terms etc.

  • I may have missed it, but is there a way to remove an asset that was accidentally added to the list?

  • @bubbles123, it is deliberately made so that one cannot delete assets because otherwise, there could be potentially orphan transactions, prices or payments etc. Is that a wrong design? Do you think you can repurpose it by editing it to something else?

  • Oh right! Didnt thought about the orphaned transactions etc. And yes okay, will repurpose it to something else. Thanks Evan!

  • Sure. No problem. Honestly, another approach would be to “nuclear” everything related to deleted assets but I prefer not to delete user contents as much as possible.

Anyway, glad it would work out (at least for now)

  • Thanks a lot for that, this new feature to track other assets is really great. Just waiting for the ability to have it also calculated with your portfolio then it would be even better! Thanks Evan.
